Hill Walking in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers rewards for hill walkers who are unsurpassed anywhere in the world. Rangala House, situated on the edge of the Knuckles mountain range, is blessed with endless opportunities for walks that can be undertaken right from the hotel itself, without the need for any initial road transport. The local tea estate owners are very friendly and Rangala House guests are welcome to walk anywhere on the many estate paths and tracks. The tea fields themselves are very attractive, as are the woodlands and cardamom groves. The long views across the mountains are breathtaking in their scale and grandeur. With pure mountain air and a profusion of wildlife (including the spectacular eagles), you will be assured of a memorable walking experience.

No specialist guides are needed for our hill walks. We can give you detailed written instructions explaining the routes to take and the walks vary from 20-minute strolls to longer walks of 3 or 4 hours. One of the things often commented on by our guests is the absence of other tourists. This region remains under-developed by the tourist industry.

Trekking

Experienced trekkers will know that the Knuckles Conservation area itself is a famous destination offering jungle treks, mountain climbing, and opportunities for overnight camping. The entrance is some 30 minutes by road upcountry from Rangala House. For trekking, a professional guide is essential and tickets must be obtained in advance from the Forestry Department. We do not offer trekking services at Rangala House but we have a close working relationship with Ravi at Sri Lankan Trekking in Kandy. If you are interested in this option, we recommend you go to www.srilankatrekking.com and contact Ravi to make a booking.
