Projects Overview

We refer to each charity initiative as a separate project. While the term may sound somewhat clinical, it allows us to clearly track progress, logistics, and costs.

Project 1 – Cotaganga Emergency Food Aid

Date: 29 November 2025

Work began immediately after the cyclone passed. A makeshift kitchen was set up in the Makuldeniya village hall.
With landslides blocking access to Rangala Town and Cotaganga, the first food delivery was made on foot before diggers could clear the roads.
It was a long, muddy trek, but the team did an outstanding job reaching those in need.

Project 2 – Rangala Town Food Distribution

Date: 30 November 2025

A second food distribution took place in Rangala Town.
This time, tuk-tuk access was possible, making the process considerably easier.

  • Meals delivered: ~150 ready-made meals

Project 3 – Cotaganga Emergency Food Aid (Second Delivery)

Date: 1 December 2025

A follow-up emergency food distribution to Cotaganga.

  • Meals delivered: ~200 ready-made meals

Project 4 – Emergency Support for Senaratne

Date: 15 December 2025

Senaratne, a local villager living about 2 km away, narrowly escaped tragedy when his home collapsed during the cyclone.
He, his wife, and their 3-year-old child managed to get out just in time, but almost everything they owned was destroyed.

A carpenter by trade, Senaratne lost his workshop and power tools. The family is currently staying with his brother.

Support provided:

  • Bed and mattress

  • Essential power tools to help him restart work

Project 5 – Cotaganga School Kits & Clothing

Date: 15 December 2025

A return visit to Cotaganga focused on helping children who had lost their homes.

Items provided for 20 families:

  • School bags

  • Stationery

  • Shoes

  • School uniforms and essentials

Project 6 – Tunisgala Village Water System Restoration

Dates: 18–21 December 2025

Following reports from Sandun (RH kitchen staff), we learned that Tunisgala village near Gomera had lost its water supply due to landslides.
The village previously relied on a simple pipe system bringing clean water from a river about ¼ km away.

Support provided:

  • New pipework

  • Installation materials

The village now has running water restored.

Project 7 – Hunasgiriya Emergency Relief (Phase 1)

Date: 19 December 2025

Hunasgiriya was one of the worst-affected towns, with widespread destruction.
Over 1,000 residents were relocated to government refugee centres, but some families remained behind, trying to recover.

Through Niro’s uncle (the local Grama Sevaka), urgent needs were identified.

Supplies delivered:

  • Foam mattresses

  • Dry rations

  • Essential household items

Project 8 – Ududumbara Student Laptop Support

Date: 27 December 2025

In Ududumbara, a young woman studying Graphic Design lost her home and her laptop during the cyclone.
The device was beyond repair, putting her education at risk.

Support provided:

  • Replacement laptop

  • Assistance recovering files from the old hard drive

  • Mattress and clothing

Project 9 – Ududumbara Family Support (Phase 2)

Date: 27 December 2025

Also in Ududumbara, Prasad identified four additional families in urgent need.

Support provided:

  • Beds

  • Mattresses

  • Pillows

  • Clothing

Project 10 – Meemure Road: Sewing Machine Replacement

Date: 27 December 2025

Prasad and Ruchira attempted to reach Meemure village an extremely remote upcountry area completely cut off by multiple landslides.
After a long and difficult walk from Ududumbara, access became impossible due to a massive landslide.

Along the route, they found a destroyed home where a family of three was sheltering nearby.
The woman, a seamstress, had lost her sewing machine and could no longer work.

Support provided:

  • Replacement sewing machine

Project 11 – Emergency Family Support

Date: 14 January 2026

We identified nine families from Ududumbara, and Bambara Bedda village as being in urgent need, after they completely lost their houses and household belongings.This initiative focused on providing essential items to help families meet their immediate daily living needs and restore a sense of safety and dignity during the recovery period.

  • Basic cooking equipment
  • Dry foods

Project 12 –Ududumbara Emergency Family & Livelihood Support

Date: 23 January 2026

Project Twelve was carried out to support nine families in the Ududumbara Division and Choolabe village, who had completely lost their houses due to the cyclone.

Among the affected families, one beneficiary—whose livelihood depends on large tree cutting—lost his essential chainsaw during the disaster. To help restore his ability to earn an income, a replacement chainsaw was donated.

In addition, farming families who lost access to water for cultivation were supported with rubber water pipes (100-metre rolls) to help restore their agricultural activities. Support was also extended to students to help them continue their education after the disruption.

This project focused on emergency household relief, livelihood recovery, and education support for affected families.

  • Rubber water pipes – 100 m rolls (agricultural support)
 

Project 13 – 70 Dry Food Packs

Date: 27 January 2026

We were able to help a total of 70 families living in Meemure area.  We put together 70 dry food packs in Teldeniya and delivered them to the centre of Meemure village  a journey of about 2 hours.  The people affected are smallholders in the local area, trying to restore the simple growing / horticulture on which they depend.  Each food pack contained:

  • Rice
  • Dhal
  • Curry powder
  • Dried fish
  • Tinned fish
  • Dried soya meat
  • Noodles
  • Sugar
  • Tea
  • Biscuits
  • Milk powder
  • Paracetamol (1 card)

We expect to make another delivery to them soon.  They are also receiving limited supplies from the government

Project 14 – Homeless Elagolla family

Date: 30 January 2026

This tragedy occurred very near to Rangala House below the village of Elagolla.   There was a mudslide that destroyed one house and a vegetable plot (200+ chilli plants lost).  A lady was killed at the time.

We provided horticultural netting needed to make a new chilli plantation.  We also delivered a large pack of approx. 400 chilli seedlings.  For a neighbouring family who lost their home, we provided

  • Double bed
  • Mattress & Pillows
  • Rice cooker
  • Electric kettle
  • Children’s school uniform, books, stationery
  • 2 x dried food packs

Project 15 – Aid for 7 families at Gangoda (Near Ududumbara)

Date: 21 February 2026

These families lost their houses and all contents.  In this landslide, 23 people were killed.  The survivors are now living in rented accommodation provided by the government.  We provided aid very similar to that in the previous project for 7 families

Project 16 – Cotaganga

Date: 04 March 2026

We found another 10 families at Cotaganga who need help.  These people have houses to live in (lent, or shared with family) but no means of support.  Some are injured, some living alone with no support.  These people have suffered indirectly from the cyclone since other villagers, who were helping to support them before, had to move away.  We have supplied 10 dried food bags and promised to do the same in future.

Project 17 – Cotaganga

Date: 07 March 2026

6 old people at Cotaganga were in need of medical aid and support.  Some have seen doctors and have prescriptions – but cannot get to the clinic in person.  We are arranging transport for them to Teldeniya Hospital.  We have also obtained and supplied crutches for these people to aid with mobility.  We also provided two beds that were needed  – one for an old single lady who is Ruwan’s grandmother (Ruwan is on the Rangala House permanent staff).
